Artificial Grass, Playground Rubber and Epoxy Floors in Riverside
More than 100 days a year at or above 90 degrees: surfaces for Riverside's schools, congregations and homes, planned around heat.
Quick answer
Turbo Surfacing installs artificial grass, poured in place rubber, epoxy floors and polished concrete in the city of Riverside for homeowners, schools, churches and associations. We are licensed, bonded and insured, we respond within 24 hours, and we plan every project around inland heat that tops 90 degrees on more than 100 days a year.
Key takeaways
- About 319,069 residents, 56.8 percent homeowners and a median home built in 1976.
- About 110 days a year at or above 90 degrees, so heat drives the design.
- The Metropolitan Water District's turf program excludes synthetic turf.
- Churches and schools make up a large share of shared outdoor space.
- We respond to estimate requests within 24 hours.
Riverside is an inland city of about 319,069 residents, far from the ocean breeze. Summer here is long and hot, which changes how surfaces should be chosen, installed and maintained.
Turbo Surfacing serves Riverside with more than 15 years of installation experience. This page explains what the numbers show about Riverside homes and heat, what the regional rebate program allows and how to prepare for an estimate.
OpenStreetMap records Shamel Park and Alcott Elementary School as named local features; these map references are not Turbo project claims or confirmation of current public access. A Riverside multi-address estimate should keep its recreation closure sketch separate from the school arrival plan before surface areas are combined.

Over 100 days a year at 90 degrees or more
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, using the nearest reporting station, give Riverside an average July high near 95 degrees and about 110 days a year at or above 90 degrees, with roughly 10 inches of rain. The city center sits about 36 miles from the coast, which makes it one of the more inland large cities we serve.
When more than three months of a year reach 90 degrees, heat is the main design question. Artificial grass in full sun can run much hotter than a natural lawn, so shade structures, lighter colors and a plan for rinsing the surface matter. Playground rubber absorbs heat, so shade over equipment and color choice are as important as thickness. Epoxy and concrete floors in garages and shops see wide temperature swings, which can stress poorly prepared slabs. We schedule installs for cooler hours and test the slab before coating.
Homes: more owners than most big cities
The Census Bureau's 2024 five year estimates count about 319,069 people in roughly 95,176 households. Owners occupy 56.8 percent of those households, higher than in Los Angeles, Long Beach or Anaheim, and the median home was built in 1976.
A 1976 midpoint puts much of the housing stock in its late forties and fifties, old enough for slabs to show cracks and settling but not as old as in coastal Los Angeles County. Because more than half of households own their home, many of our requests come directly from households asking about backyards, patios, driveways and garage floors, along with associations managing shared lawns. With a median build year of 1976, we often see garage floors with stains and hairline cracks, patios with lifted edges and side yards where the lawn is no longer worth the water it uses.
Water programs and artificial grass
Riverside's water service is handled by local utilities, and rebate rules depend on your account. The Metropolitan Water District's SoCalWaterSmart turf replacement program covers part of western Riverside County, and its terms state that no synthetic turf is allowed. Check with your own water provider about current local programs and whether artificial grass is eligible.
In the Coachella Valley, farther east in the same county, some programs have been written differently, but that does not apply to the city of Riverside. We recommend you treat rebates and artificial grass as separate decisions: a rebate project for decorative lawns and artificial grass for spaces where people and pets actually play. Always wait for written approval before removing lawn.
State law adds a deadline for larger properties. AB 1572 ends potable irrigation of nonfunctional turf on January 1, 2028 for commercial, industrial and institutional properties and January 1, 2029 for HOA common areas.
A city with many congregations
OpenStreetMap volunteers have mapped about 230 places of worship in Riverside, more than any other category in our fact sheet except schools, which number about 130. The counts are approximate, but they point to a city where churches and school campuses make up a large share of the shared outdoor space. The same volunteer map lists about 120 parks and 96 playgrounds.
Churches. Entrances, parking lots, fellowship halls and courtyards take constant use and sit in full sun. We plan around services and help you choose finishes that stay cooler and safer.
Schools and public agencies. Publicly funded work follows California prevailing wage rules. Send your bid documents and we will tell you what documentation we can provide.
Child care. Title 22, section 101238.2 requires cushioning under and around climbing equipment at licensed centers, and we size surfaces to the tallest platform.
Scheduling around services, school days and summer heat
In a city this hot, the calendar matters as much as the product. We usually start early, finish before the hottest part of the afternoon and avoid working with binders, adhesives and coatings in peak heat. For churches we plan around services and mid week programs. For schools we aim for breaks, weekends and summer, while watching for the hottest weeks. Tell us your deadline and your constraints and we will say plainly what the season allows. If a project has to happen in July, we plan the start time, shade for crews and curing windows around it, and we explain any tradeoffs before you sign. We also share a simple pre job checklist so crews, staff and neighbors know when noise, deliveries and closures will happen.
