A dense city of small lots, many schools and neighborhood playgrounds: surfaces for tight yards and busy sites.
Quick answer
Turbo Surfacing installs artificial grass, poured in place rubber, epoxy floors and polished concrete in Garden Grove for homeowners, schools, churches and businesses. We are licensed, bonded and insured, we respond within 24 hours, and we plan around small lots, mid 1960s homes and a city with far more mapped playgrounds than parks.
Key takeaways
- About 170,960 residents and a median home built in 1965.
- About 75 mapped playgrounds against only 22 mapped parks.
- About 68 mapped schools and 45 places of worship manage many shared sites.
- About 30 days a year at or above 90 degrees, so color and shade matter.
- We respond to estimate requests within 24 hours.
Garden Grove is a dense, mostly built out Orange County city of about 171,000 people. The median home was built in 1965, lots are modest and OpenStreetMap shows far more schools and playgrounds than formal parks.
Turbo Surfacing serves Garden Grove with more than 15 years of installation experience. This page explains what public data shows about Garden Grove homes, climate and open space, and why small yards and shared sites drive most of our work here.
OpenStreetMap records Faylane Park and Dr. C C Violette Elementary School as named local features; these map references are not Turbo project claims or confirmation of current public access. For Garden Grove requests, give each school or park photograph an address reference so a gate or drain is not attributed to the wrong site.

A 1960s city of small lots
The Census Bureau's 2024 five year estimates count about 170,960 people in roughly 49,120 households. Owners occupy 53.1 percent of them, and the median home was built in 1965.
The numbers work out to about 3.5 people per household, which suggests that many homes shelter large families or more than one generation. Backyards here work hard. They hold family meals, play space, a vegetable bed and often a dog. Turf stands up to that traffic where sod turns to mud, and it requires no mowing, which matters for owners who commute or work evenings.
The age of the housing has another effect. Mid 1960s slabs have often been patched, and the original garage floor may be stained and rough. We grind, repair and coat, and we replace sections that have heaved. Narrow driveways and shared side walls make access tight, so we plan material staging and cleanup carefully.
Many more playgrounds than parks
OpenStreetMap volunteers have mapped about 22 parks and 75 playgrounds in Garden Grove, along with 68 schools. The ratio is unusual: playgrounds outnumber parks by more than three to one. It tells you that much of the play equipment is on school grounds, in apartment communities, at churches and at child care sites, not in large city parks. Mapped parks include Haster Basin Recreation Area, Pioneer Park, Chapman Sports Complex and Eastgate Park.
Private and institutional play areas are where cushioning decisions are made by principals, managers and directors rather than a parks department. They need a surface under and around swings, slides and climbing equipment, and they need it to last. Poured in place rubber stays level, drains and does not migrate. We measure the tallest platform on each structure, match the thickness to that fall height and leave a written record.
OpenStreetMap shows two child care sites. Title 22, section 101238.2 requires licensed centers to cushion the area under and around climbing equipment.
A warm inland climate
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give Garden Grove an average July high near 83 degrees, about 30 days a year at or above 90 degrees and roughly 12.5 inches of rain. The coast is about 9 miles away, which puts the city in the near coastal band.
Thirty days of 90 degree heat is enough to shape the work. Dark rubber and synthetic grass warm in direct sun, so we choose lighter, blended colors where equipment sits in the open and suggest shade sails. Moisture is less of a problem than at the beach, but we still compact and grade bases so water leaves the surface.
Schools, churches and small businesses
OpenStreetMap volunteers have mapped about 68 schools and 45 places of worship, including Colonial Academy, Garden Grove Day School and Church of Christ of Garden Grove. Both kinds of site have halls, kitchens, entries and play yards, and both work around fixed calendars.
Garden Grove also has many small commercial buildings: shops, workshops, storage units and food businesses. Epoxy and polished concrete floors suit these sites because they are easy to clean and stand up to carts, forklifts and foot traffic. We prepare, coat and return a floor to service quickly, usually over a weekend or a few evenings, and we coordinate with the building manager.
Making a small yard feel bigger
In a small Garden Grove yard, every square foot counts. A clean, level turf surface makes a narrow yard read as one room, and it takes a lighter hand than sod: no mower to store, no hose to coil. We install turf to the property line with tidy edges, set a drain path away from the house and place any pavers or planters so the yard still works for chairs and a table. Garage slabs and side walkways can be coated in the same visit.
Garden Grove's older slabs deserve a word. Mid 1960s driveways and garage floors often have settled joints and surface scaling. We probe the slab, measure the cracks and decide whether a coating will hold or the concrete needs patching or replacement first. We would rather tell you that before we start than after.
Water and turf programs
We have not confirmed a current turf replacement program for Garden Grove, and the data we use does not list its water provider. Ask your provider what it offers for your address.
Rebates normally pay for replacing lawn with plants, so artificial grass is a separate decision. It earns its place in play strips, pet runs and narrow side yards where plants and mowers are impractical.
