PIP Rubber Restoration vs. Replacement: When to Repair, When to Rip Out
Faded color, surface checks, loose granules — most failing PIP rubber surfaces can be restored for 30–40% of replacement cost. Here's how to tell which path fits your job.
Before quoting a tear-out, walk the surface and check these in order:
- Color faded but surface intact - Surface "checking" (small hairline cracks <1/16") - Loose top granules in isolated spots - Edge lift <1 inch from substrate - Surface still passes ASTM F1292 impact test
- Failed ASTM F1292 impact test (compromised cushion) - Surface lift 1 inch with delamination - Substrate failure (cracked concrete, settled aggregate base) - Mold or biological growth penetrating to base layer - Severe oxidation crumbling under foot pressure
